Abstract
This paper is about the experience of a technical and vocational institution’s effort to implement a pilot project in blended learning through online learning as an alternative delivery system for some courses in traditional programmes. The main objectives were the creation of additional access to cater to high demand, the introduction of a measure of flexibility in the delivery and the building of capacity among staff to design and develop courses for online learning and to manage and implement the delivery of these courses.

The paper looks as issues such as the selection of a Course Management System, Preparation of Faculty and Students for online Learning and discusses an income and expenditure model for use in commercial course management systems.

The study includes a cost and benefits assessment of the innovation, faculty satisfaction with the course management system and perception of the effectiveness of the preparation for online learning.

The conclusion summarizes lessons learned and identifies institutional challenges. It also makes recommendations for solutions to provide adequately for integration of online learning into the wider institution and for managing the growth which is envisaged for online learning.

Key Words: Course Management System, online learning, business model, teacher preparation, flexible learning.
